Respondus Lockdown Browser Install

Respondus LockDown Browser is a locked browser that prevents you from printing, copying, going to another page, or using outside tools during a Canvas quiz activity. Your instructor may have elected to use Respondus LockDown Browser enabled quizzes in Canvas, which require students to download and install a special browser prior to taking the quiz. LockDown enabled quizzes will not allow you to take the quiz on a standard browser.

Each institution's LockDown Browser application is unique to that institution. If you already have Respondus LockDown Browser installed on you computer via a non-Yale Canvas course, you will be unable to use it for any Canvas @ Yale course. You may have more than one instance of the browser installed. If this is the case, make sure you select the correct one for your Canvas @ Yale course

To use LockDown Browser, students must download and install the NCAT-specific version of the LocKDown Browser on their personal computer. Chromebook users must add the extension to the Chrome browser. The software cannot be used on mobile phones. Faculty can setup the LockDown Browser by accessing the dashboard from within a Blackboard course. If you are planning to administer online tests in Blackboard, you should consider using the Respondus LockDown Browser.

Your course may also implement the use of Respondus Monitor with LockDown Browser. The Respondus Monitor software uses a webcam with your computer along with a microphone to record you while completing your online exam in LockDown Browser. If Respondus Monitor is used, your computer must have a functioning webcam and microphone. Windows users need to have Adobe Flash Player installed to Internet Explorer, even if a different browser is normally used. Mac users must have Adobe Flash Player installed to Safari. A broadband connection is also required. Installing LockDown Browser on your computer also installs Respondus Monitor.

In Ultra Course View, if a student tries to use a regular browser to access a test that has Respondus enabled, Blackboard will display a button to open the assessment in Respondus LockDown Browser. When students click the button, Respondus will either prompt students to install the browser (if it is not yet installed), or it will open the Respondus LockDown Browser, automatically log the student in to Blackboard, and present the test.

If you need to take a quiz with Respondus Lockdown browser and want to install it in advance, you can access the program in the Canvas Orientation class "My GRC Backpack" that all GRC students have in Canvas, if a practice test is not available in their other Canvas class(es). The browser can still be loaded from the actual class quiz page at the time you take the quiz.

What will I need to take a test using LockDown Browser and/or Respondus Monitor? You will need to install LockDown Browser in order to take any exam that requires its use. Once you have installed LockDown Browser, you will need to close out of the web browser you were using, and open the LockDown Browser in order to access your test. The homework manager program or learning management system (WebCampus) in which your instructor created the exam and the device you choose to use to take the exam will determine how you install and use Lockdown Browser.

Faculty have the option of applying the Respondus LockDown Browser to assessments given in Canvas. When the LockDown Browser is applied, students will be unable to print, capture screen content, go to URL's or access other applications while taking assessments. Students will need to download and install the LockDown browser onto your device in order to access assessments that use the LockDown Browser. Once installed, you will use this application to login to Canvas whenever you take an assessment that uses the LockDown Browser. You will only need to use this browser to login to Canvas when taking an assessment that uses the LockDown Browser. Once it is installed, you do not have to install it again for a different assessment, even if it is in a different course.

LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment in Canvas. When your instructor enables it in a Canvas quiz, you will be prompted to take the quiz using LockDown Browser. Each institution has its own version of LockDown Browser, so if you have it from another school, you will need to uninstall that one and install the proper one for USNH.

For Faculty: Respondus Lockdown Browser (LDB) is a secure browser for taking tests in Canvas. The lockdown browser is suited for taking tests in a proctored environment, such as in-class exams or in testing center. In order to take an exam using Lockdown Browser, students would need to install Lockdown Browser on their personal computers.
